Do you have a toddler that loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carl?! If so, you should definitely do this hungry caterpillar activity with your child!

Our toddler had a BLAST doing this, and he was willing to try some new foods that he normally wouldn't venture out to on a regular day. That's an added bonus for sure!

  1. Get the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carl, and begin reading it to your child! My little boy pretty much knew the book by heart by the time we surprised him with the hungry caterpillar activity one morning when he woke up.
  2. Gather your ingredients. I got all of mine at our local Kroger. We aren't too big on keeping sweets in the house, so I wanted to get small portions of all the desserts in the book. I was actually excited to find everything I needed in the clearance section at the Kroger bakery!
    • 1st Platter:
    • 1 Apple
    • 1 Pear
    • 3 Plums (fresh or canned)
    • 4 Strawberries
    • 1 Orange (sliced)
    • 2nd Platter:
    • A slice of chocolate cake
    • 1 ice cream cone
    • 1 Dill Pickle
    • A slice of Swiss cheese
    • Pepperonis
    • 1 Lollipop
    • One slice of strawberry cheesecake
    • A piece of salami [or Turkey because that's what we had on hand ;)]
    • 1 Cupcake
    • 1 piece of watermelon
  3. Find a couple decent sized platters to display the two different sections of the book.
  4. Get a butterfly coloring sheet and a few colors, or draw a butterfly similar to the one in the book. I chose to draw the butterfly for him to color, but it is also very easy to find a printable butterfly coloring page on the internet.
  5. Looking at the pages in the book, or the picture above, lay out the ingredients on your platters.
  6. Finally, ENJOY your hungry caterpillar activity encounter with your little one!!
  7. Don't forget to snap some pictures to share with us!
