DIY Whale Themed Bib Holder for Nursery
You know when you have a deco idea stuck in your mind, but you can't ever find the perfect piece at the store? Happens to me all the time! When decorating my son's nursery, I decided to build the bib holder I had been searching for. This tutorial will show you how to make your own DIY whale themed bib holder. I chose to use a whale tail because my son has a nautical themed nursery.
If you are feeling adventurous, you could always tailor this design to fit the theme of your room or nursery by simply cutting a different shape out of the sheet metal and getting hooks to match your design.
DIY WHALE THEMED BIB HOLDER
Difficulty: Medium
Supplies:
- 8ft board (buy new or find a piece of rustic appearing wood that has weathered over time)
- Small can of Minwax stain (I used dark walnut)
- Cloth rag
- Sponge tipped paintbrush
- 3 hooks (I found the whale tail hooks at Hobby Lobby)
- Feel free to find any hooks that best fit your style
- Piece of sheet metal (I got a scrap piece from a friend that had just built a barn)
- The gray piece of sheet metal already matched the nursery so I chose not to paint the piece. If you would like a different color than the piece of metal you find, then feel free to paint it using Rust-Oleum spray paint.
- Metal cutting sheers (a plasma cutter could also be used here if accessible)
- Liquid nail
- Miter saw, skill saw or table saw (really any saw that you have would probably work)
- 4 - 180 degree open faced brackets (pictured below)
- 3 sawtooth ring picture hangers (pictured above)
- Drill
- Pencil
- Sharpie
- Tape Measure
- Hammer
- 6 screws/nails
- Stud finder (optional)
Instructions:
- Gather supplies and find materials.
- Cut the 8 ft board into 3 pieces, each piece 30 inches in length (feel free to customize to the dimensions of your wall)
- Stain the 3 pieces of board following the instructions on the can of Minwax stain and allow to dry. (I chose not to stain the back side of the boards to save some time)
- Line the 3 pieces of board up and install the open faced brackets on the back. (pictured below)You can leave a small space between each board, or you can let each piece of board kiss the next with no space in between.
- Install the 3 sawtooth ring picture hangers spaced out at the top edge of the board. (also pictured above)
- Measure out 28 inches on the backside of the sheet metal. Place a small marking at each end of the 28 inches. (Please customize if needed to fit your design)
- Using the sharpie, draw the outline of the tail on the backside of the sheet metal staying within the 28 inch markings.
- Use metal sheers (or plasma cutter) to cut out your whale tail drawn on the sheet metal.
- Line the backside of your whale tail with liquid nail and glue it down on the boards about 1" from the top leaving room to install the hooks at the bottom.
- Determine where you want your whale tail hooks to be and place a pencil mark at each spot.
- Install the three hooks using the hammer and 3 nails, or the drill and 3 screws.
- Hang your finished whale themed bib holder on the wall. (Use stud finder if needed)
