DIY Re-purposed Window Shelf
DIY Re-purposed Window Shelf
This DIY re-purposed window shelf makes for a great decor piece in your home. I hung it in my foyer and still get so many positive comments about it when people visit.
DIFFICULTY: EASY
SUPPLIES:
- (1) Window (choose your size and style, I found mine for $20 at a secondhand store, I have also seen them at Care Help)
- (2) Hooks that include hardware (any size, any style)
- (3) Knobs that include hardware (any size, any style)
- (2) Brackets that include hardware (any size, any style)
- Painter's Tape
- Paint for Base Color (I used an off-white, feel free to use any color you desire)
- Bronze, Brown, Gray or Gold Paint (I got a small bottle of craft paint at Walmart for .99 cents to give the piece a distressed look in a short amount of time)
- Paintbrush
- Phillips Screwdriver
- Drill
- Drill Bit
- Pencil
- Measuring Tape
- (1) 1x4x6 or any reclaimed wood cut the length of your window
- Saw (chop saw, skill saw, miter saw, hack saw...whatever you have on hand)
- Picture Hanging Kit
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Cut the 1x4x6 the length of your window.
- Outline the glass windowpanes with painters tape.
- Paint the window and shelf the base color that you chose.
- Allow pieces to dry.
- Use the small bottle of paint to make accent or distressed appearing marks on the window and shelf.
- Allow pieces to dry.
- Determine where you want your shelf to be set and mark both sides with the pencil.
- Align shelf with your markings and secure with a bracket on each side. Usually the hardware comes with the bracket, so I just used the drill to insert the screws.
- Determine where you want your hooks and knobs and pencil a small marking at each point.
- Insert bit into drill and drill holes at each marking for the hooks and knobs.
- Attach hooks and knobs in their designated location and tighten with drill or screwdriver.
- Attach picture hanger to the upper backside of your window frame.
- Hang and add decor.
