Monster Truck Party Food Ideas

A fun and easy DIY party theme for your monster truck loving boy!

This party has an easy setup, easy multi-colored decorations and it’s easy on the budget.

My son had been begging for months to have a monster truck birthday party, so we made it happen.

I really wanted the food/snacks to feel like we were at a monster truck show having concession type food with a party twist.

Our monster truck party food spread included a birthday cake, oreos, chips, pizza, chex mix, cotton candy cones, pudding cups and decorated cookies.

I wanted to add the remote control monster truck gift he got for his birthday to this post.
He absolutely LOVED it, and still plays with it on a daily basis! It’s also affordable, which is an added bonus!

THE CAKE

Now don’t let this cake intimidate you! I’m no cake expert, just a DIY queen over here! I love using the recipes from Recipe Girl, even though it is a cupcake recipe, I always use this batter for my 3 layer party cakes . Here’s the link to the recipe I used for this cake: Chocolate Wedding Cupcakes, and the decorative design was inspired by Feeling Nifty’s Monster Truck Cake. It was super easy to cover any parts I couldn’t get to smooth out because of all the “mud” on and around the cake. I bought a monster truck and two hot wheels cars for the cake topper. I used a buttercream icing and green food coloring for the cake. I also used a store bought chocolate icing for the brown area of icing on the cake. Next, I placed crushed oreos and Whoppers on and around the “mud” areas of the cake. Voila!

TRUCK PARTS

I used classic chex mix and cheddar chex mix to be the “truck parts.” Feel free to use these, or you could even use a pub mix in it’s place. I also put single serve variety bags of chips in a bowl next to these, just to give party goers another easy salty option.

MUD PITS

I bought mini plastic dessert cups, chocolate Jello pudding mix and used the leftover crushed oreos from the cake for the mud pits. Mix the pudding according to the package and spoon into the dessert cups. Top with crushed Oreos immediately before serving so they do not become stale. I premade the cups a couple hours before the party and stored them in the fridge on their designated platter. When the party was starting, I quickly sprinkled the crushed Oreos on top and served them on a rectangle food board with handles.

You could also buy premade chocolate pudding cups for a time saver! If you went this route, you would just peel the seals off the pudding and sprinkle the top of each cup with chopped oreos.

SPARE TIRES

Our “spare tires” were Oreos because our party was mid August in Louisiana! Talk about HOTTT! If I were doing this party in cooler weather, I would’ve used chocolate donuts to be the “spare tires.” Feel free to use whatever works best for your party, whether it be indoors, outdoors, cool weather or warm weather. I suggest using a long rectangle tray for serving these.

COTTON CANDY CONES

The kids LOVED these! It was too hot for me to serve ice cream in a cone without it melting before the kids ate it, so I came up with this idea. I bought waffle cones and two different colors of cotton candy. I stuffed each cone with cotton candy and served on a tray. If by some chance your child doesn’t care for cotton candy, you could put popcorn in the waffle cones as another option.

THEMED COOKIES

I usually find someone locally to make us some party themed cookies. I love how these were individually wrapped, and all the colors of the party decor. We got a great deal, but these cookies can often be on the pricey side. If you are on a very tight budget, you could always make some chocolate chip cookies in their place.

PIZZA

I don’t meet many kids that don’t like pizza! We bought frozen pizzas from our local grocery store and cooked them about 45 minutes before the party. We sliced them up, piled them one of the baking trays and kept them warm in the oven until the party started. This was definitely a hit, and the whole platter was gone in a matter of minutes. I cooked the pizzas myself keeping the costs down, but you could totally order pizzas, slice them up and place on a round platter if that’s a better fit for you.

DECOR

I usually set up one party table that’s themed & the center of everything going on at the party. I find it helps me get away with a lot less decor which ultimately saves time and money. For this party, I used a black table cloth, a string of honeycomb paper decor (from the dollar store), and a string of multicolor tassel garland. I secured the streamers on both ends with a clear push pin. I found a set of orange traffic cones, as well as some plastic trophies to scatter on the table for decor. Lastly, I put a couple toy monster trucks on the table to finish it off. For cutlery and paper goods I had black and white striped napkins, blue plates, green utensils and green paper straws. Lastly, for the food labels on the table I cut a squares of about 3”x5” from construction paper, folded them in half and labeled each item with a sharpie. See the pictures throughout the post for reference.

KID’S TABLE

Another thing I do that’s always a hit at parties is having a kid’s table! I use our kid sized picnic table and have activities that go along with the theme of the party. I had monster truck themed stickers, toys, coloring sheets and colors, as well as juice boxes for the kids.
